Dr Dílis Clare, interviewed by Ruth Ruane, at the Budding Cafe, Galway, Ireland.

The Budding CafeHi Dílis, thank you for taking time out to do this interview for our Nature's Nexus readers.  I know you for a few years now and think you are an amazing herbalist and that you are pure inspiration as a doctor and a business woman. I admire your common sense approach to life and health and I have to say that I find your light heartedness is positively contagious.

We might as well launch right into this as time is precious, we only have an hour.

Ruth:  In simple terms what did your life look like before you became a herbalist?

Dr. Clare: "Pretty much the same. I did my surgeries everyday. Went home, cooked  for the kids, they are grown up now. Looked after the garden. Being a herbalist just meant I had a different tool box to use at work. And one that’s more in keeping with my interests and patients stories, it’s much more related to people’s narrative about their own health. So that’s the difference, and I have time, instead of having 15 minutes for an appointment I have an hour with 30 minutes follow up. That’s time for the patient, for me to figure out what they need to do. I see myself as a sign post. A lot of General practice was very like that as well. But just more concentrated. A lot of it is still the same. It’s more fun."

Body hair is natural...
Written by Ruth Ruane

...so why is our society not accepting of it?

Shirtless hairy guyThe media portrays beautiful women as being free from "unsightly" body hair.  In the last ten years the trend has developed so that now men are embarrassed about having hairy legs or arm pits. Interestingly, removal of body hair is not a new thing. Egyptian priests removed every inch of body hair, including eyebrows.

When you have a problem...Ask Mammy!
Written by Ruth Ruane

SunflowerThere is something about Agony Aunts that draws people to them.

I think it's that feeling of "I'm not alone" or "at least I don't have that to worry about" or maybe it's just some nosy fascination with other peoples lives.

There is a website that you just have to go and visit. It's called Ask Mammy. There is a very special Mammy at the controls. I know because I met her face to face. She has a kind heart and is a great listener. She has an open mind and never judges anyone. It's just open arms and an understanding ear.

Ask Mammy has a section where you can email her if you have a personal problem of any kind. The topics are Mind, Body, Spirit, Career, Family, Relationships, Practical. You can read problems that have been published, using fictional names of course. There is a forum where everybody shares. There is an articles section with some very interesting reading, for example Meditation, Staying Sane, One Baby Step at a Time, Let Go,  and Claiming Your Dream.
